If you look around your bathroom you will probably notice there is a lot hair built up that lingers. Unfortunately, our hair can be the cause of blockage in both sink drains and shower drains. So, have compiled a list of tips and tricks that can help you avoid build up from hair in your drains.
Install Drain Covers
An option to consider investing in is Top or Underneath drain covers. If you choose top drain screens you simply place the screen over the top of your screen, and it catches anything that may cause damage to your drain and makes for easy removal. There are also drains you can install beneath your drain cover. You simply remove the drain cover, install the screen and secure it with plumbing putty, and reinstall the drain cover.
Try to Keep Hair Away from Sinks and Showers
You can take precautions such as brushing your hair before showering to get rid of any loose hairs that may fall out and get in your shower drain and eventually clog it. You can also look out for any loose hairs that may come to us during your shower time and move them safely to the side of the tube. This will help with preventing clogs that may occur over time from building up in the pipes.
How to Clear Out Hair Clogs
- Homemade Rinse – Once per month, pour one cup of baking soda directly into the drain you wish to clear. Afterward, pour one cup of vinegar (white or apple cider) directly into the drain. It’s going to bubble up passed the drain, so don’t be alarmed! Allow this to sit for a few minutes and then pour one or more cups of boiling water directly into the drain opening to clear any broken-up debris.
- Clear Drain Screens Regularly – After installing drain screens, it’s just as important to clear them out every week or so. You can simply throw on a pair of gloves, reach your hand into them, and pull the hair out. For the cover drains screens, you’ll have to unscrew the drain cover to clear out the screen.
- Call Your Local Plumber – Sometimes drain clogs can’t be cleared with baking soda, vinegar, or drain screens. Plumbers with professional equipment might be needed if the clog is bigger than expected and if it’s further down the pipe.
