The dishwasher has become an indispensable appliance for many households, helping us save both time and water. Modern dishwashers tend to be an essential item that is found from your home to your work office kitchen. They are an amazing device to have, but there are down sides to having this appliance. You have to be careful with what items you load into the dishwasher, because they can be helpful and destructive at the same time and in certain cases, cause serious plumbing and drainage problems.
There are also some items you think would be okay to run through your machine but can be damaging to the overall unit itself. The experts at Team Plumbing have compiled a list to help you decide what items are appropriate and what items may not be appropriate to run through your machine.

What NOT to Put in The Dishwasher

No Food-Covered Dishes: Make sure you rinse off all the food that could potentially be on the items you are wanting to load into your dishwasher. Food particles may be broken up by the jets, but the left-over particles of food can easily clog the drain line resulting in the washer needing serviced by a plumber. Unfortunately, dishwashers are not garbage disposals. So, with this said, you should keep in mind, that it is probably a good thing to be cautious about the items your washer. Avoid sauces, fat, grease, and solid foods. As, these can all lead to dealing with a malfunctioning dishwasher.
No Sticky Labels: Always remove the sticky labels that come with new dishes or plasticware. As, we know these labels can be a pain to remove, but if you don’t remove them by soaking the glassware in hot water with soap beforehand it can cause major issues if you try to do so in the dishwasher. By not taking the labels off beforehand it can lead to clogging of the drain and filters.
No Dishes or Utensils that have been Glued: Always wash any items you may have repaired with glue by hand. Glue and other adhesives can become lose when exposed to the high heat of the water in the dishwasher. This can cause pieces of the dishes and other utensils to come lose, and result in the drain and filters to become clogged and blocked.
No Hollow Plastic: The most common items found with hollow plastic, is in the handles found on common cooking utensils. By placing them in the dishwasher, you are creating the opportunity for water to pushed up in the handle. Once this happens, you can run into the issue of mold growth which can cause you and your family to get sick from the mold contamination. The same goes for travel mugs. Unless specifically stated as dishwasher safe. Use caution to avoid mold growth.
No Wood: A trip through the dishwasher for wooden items can be detrimental to longevity of their life span. We recommend handwashing wooden spoons, cutting boards, and other kitchen items. By hand washing these items you avoid having to deal with the wood swelling, warping, or cracking, as well as, stripping of protective finishes.
No Cast Iron: Putting cast iron items through the dishwasher is not recommended due to the damage that the wash will cause to the item. Cast Iron cookware becomes seasoned with each use, and by washing the item in the dishwasher you strip the seasoning off ruining the item.
Here at Team Plumbing we hope these tips and tricks on what is appropriate to wash in your dishwasher helps you avoid having to deal with the headache of clogged pipes. If you ever need assistance please feel free to the experts at (719) 226-0711 whenever you need us!
